Riverside High School Newsletter, October Last week was Green Week at our school. On Monday, the Year 9 students cleaned the school garden and collected forty bags of rubbish. On Wednesday, the science club planted twenty-five young trees behind the sports hall. Our head teacher, Mr Kaya, said, “A clean school is everyone's job.” Now we are getting ready for Republic Day on 29 October. The drama club is going to perform a short play about the early years of the Republic, and the school choir is practising three songs. The music teacher says, “We must start on time, so all performers have to be in the hall at 9.30.” After the ceremony, there will be an exhibition of students' paintings in the library.

Read the newsletter and answer the questions.

a)What did the Year 9 students do on Monday? Write two things.

b)What time do the performers have to be in the hall? Why?

Hi Ece, Guess what? We moved last month! Our old flat was in the city centre. It was on the eighth floor and it had a tiny balcony. It was noisy because of the traffic, but the shops and my school were very close. Now we live in a small village house with a garden. There are solar panels on the roof, so our electricity bills are much lower. There are only two bedrooms, so I share a room with my little sister, Defne. At first, this was a big problem. She wanted to sleep at 9 p.m., but I wanted to read until 11. We argued every night. Then Mum had an idea: now I read in the living room until 10 and then go to bed quietly. We don't argue anymore. The bus journey to school takes 40 minutes now, and I miss the city a bit. But when I sit in the garden in the evening and listen to the birds, I feel really relaxed. I don't want to go back! Love, Zeynep

Read Zeynep's email and answer the questions.

a)Write two differences between Zeynep's old home and her new home.

b)What was the problem between Zeynep and Defne? How did they solve it?

c)Is Zeynep happy in her new home? Explain your answer with information from the email.

How Will We Travel in 2040? Imagine a school bus with no driver. Engineers say self-driving buses will be common in many cities by 2040. These buses will use cameras and sensors to “see” the road, and they will never get tired or distracted. Because they will be electric, they won't pollute the air. Parents will follow the bus on an app and know exactly when their children arrive at school. Flying taxis are another big idea. Some companies are already testing small air taxis that take off and land like helicopters. A trip that takes an hour by car in heavy traffic may take only fifteen minutes by air. However, there are still problems. The batteries can only carry the taxi for short distances, and a ticket will probably be very expensive at first. Also, cities will need special landing areas on rooftops. So, flying taxis probably won't replace buses soon. Most of us will still travel on the ground, but the ground will be much smarter.

Read the text and answer the questions.

a)Write two advantages of self-driving school buses.

b)Why can flying taxis be useful in big cities?

c)The writer thinks flying taxis probably won't replace buses soon. Write two reasons from the text.

International Day at Bosphorus College Last Friday, four exchange students introduced their countries at our school. Ana is Portuguese. Her home city, Lisbon, is the capital of Portugal. She invited us to visit the Belém Tower, a stone tower from the sixteenth century, and to try the famous custard tarts. Ana can speak Portuguese, Spanish and English. Portugal's national day is on 10 June. Bence comes from Budapest, the capital of Hungary. He showed photos of the Hungarian Parliament Building, a huge old building on the River Danube. “You can take a boat trip on the river at night. The lights are amazing!” he said. Hungarians celebrate a national day on 15 March. Aruzhan is from Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. She talked about the Baiterek Tower, a modern tower with a great view of the city. She can speak Kazakh, Russian and a little Turkish. Kazakhstan's Independence Day is on 16 December, so it is usually very cold! Lucas is Brazilian, and he speaks Portuguese, too. “Many people think Rio de Janeiro is the capital of Brazil, but that's not true. Our capital is Brasília,” he explained. Brazilians celebrate their Independence Day on 7 September.
